Marriage Boot Camp

I watched a show on TV the other night about marriage boot camp. There were 3 couples in the documentary that had serious marriage problems. Infidelity, shutting themselves down emotionally, physical abuse, financial issues - fun stuff. One guy was chatting online with single Russian women. Another woman cheated on her husband a few times. Another man still hadn’t forgiven his ex-wife who cheated on him and he was taking it out on his current wife.

I give these couples credit for trying to work their issues out. I think the root of a lot of their problems are that they are not happy with themselves and they are looking for their partner to make them happy. This is not possible. If you aren’t happy yourself there is no way another person can make you happy. Hard lesson to learn.

As a licensed marriage and family therapist, I think you are correct that people who aren’t happy with themselves are often looking outside of themselves for happiness. But in many marriages this cannot be sustained and leads to many problems in the marriage
